Course Description
An introductory course in counselling for anyone who feels that an understanding of counselling and counselling skills would be helpful to them, in their career, voluntary work or personal life.
How is the Qualification Achieved ?
The assessment of the course will be through a portfolio of written work and observations and recordings of counselling skills practice.
There is also a final exam based on your observations of a video taped counselling skills session.
On Successful Completion of this Course
This is the first step in a progression route offered at the college all the way to qualification as a counsellor. From the Certificate in Initial Counselling Skills you can go on to study the CPCAB Certficate in Counselling Skills and Studies, and then to the CPCAB Advanced Diploma. It's also a standalone course which will enable you to acquire new skills which will be useful in the workplace.

The course will introduce you to the practice of some basic counselling skills and relate these skills to particular settings. It will introduce you to the theoretical foundations of counselling, introduce you to self-development work and emphasise the necessity for the maintenance of ethical boundaries in counselling.
